Day 36: 135 <-- official 5-week weight

Hmm. Either I've plateaued (yikes, there's that word again), or I am cheating too much. Well, since I'm not really too overweight, I guess I'm doing fine. So that handful of M&Ms was ok ... both days?

I have been giving blood on-and-off for a while, when I remember and when I have time. Well, this time I tried donating platelettes and red blood cells. You get hooked up to a machine that takes your blood out, separates the platelettes out and puts them into a bag (like the whole blood), then puts the rest back into your arm. It's fascinating, as long as you don't think that it's putting blood back into your body that has been outside of it!!

It pumps out some, and then as that gets full, it pumps back in. When it goes back in, it is mixed with some anti-coagulant, so things don't get gummed up. I kept getting a tingling sensation on my lips when that happened. Not like light-headed, but a smaller sensation. Not bad, but weird. I made an appointment to do it again, as long as I have time I'll do it again. It takes a little longer, but not too bad.

Still job hunting. Heard of another position, the guy was commuting from Indianapolis, IN; turned in his resignation yesterday.

Trying to setup all my computers on Windows XP. I got 2 running so far, one of them now has the DSL connection -- a different computer than the DSL was on before. After removing the DSL, the main computer has gotten very flaky, I can't even bring up an explorer window. I guess it was during the uninstall. I guess that puts that computer at the top of the list for a new OS, eh?

Also, the laptop has a Synaptic PS/2 Touchpad on it, and it kept locking up. I noticed that it would always hang while I was moving the mouse, so I downloaded a new mouse driver from Synaptic, and it has been working like a champ since. I was getting worried about it.

So, now I have 2 computers that are bugging me -- only 30 days until you must activate Windows XP. Why does Microsoft do this? Isn't it enough to buy the software and type in the stupid 351-digit code, now it has to connect to the home base. What do you think they're recording? IP Addresses? Which keys have "phoned home"? Makes me want to find a crack to eliminate the activation. I guess that would be technically illegal, since you would be "modifying" the code, which is specifically prohibited in the license agreement.

Grrr!

Start with a diet update? Sure, glad you asked.

Day 27 (Sat): 134
Day 28: 134
Day 29: 135 <-- official 4-week weight
Day 30: 135
Day 31: 134
Day 32: 134
Day 33: 135

OK, so I had 2 cokes this week. And some M&Ms. Like I said before, if I have to eat like a rabbit to keep 6 pounds off, then I don't think it will be worth it. I've been going out to eat a little more, which is probably not good.

Still job hunting. I heard back from my interview that they were impressed; I guess it will depend on salary, eh? I was supposed to have an interview back at the bank (different department), but it hasn't happened yet. And I'm still sending out resumes as I find positions. Quite a few more listings than there were six months ago -- a good sign.

I bounced a check yesterday. I thought I had moved some money to cover anything, but I guess I was a day late (or a dollar short? hahaha). Bummer. I thought that check had already cleared; they held it longer than I expected, so I didn't think about it coming in then. I've been trying to keep up with my money better, but when you don't have much coming in, it's hard to get motivated to keep balancing the shrinking checkbook.

My daughter is on a soccer 3v3 team, they have a "tournament" this weekend. 5 games in about 5 hours, she'll be tired.

We rented a video game, "Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King," this weekend. Fun, but not sure I'd play it a lot. It recreates a lot of the fighting scenes (and embellishes a lot of them to add fighting, where the movie / books didn't really have them). You can play as different characters. The fun part is co-operative mode, where you can be one character, and player 2 can be a different character. The fights are easier, since there are 2 of you. I wish it was split-screen, though, so you could be in different places. In one scene, you have to run back and forth on the wall of Helms Deep (I think) trying to keep from getting overrun. However, since you both have to be on the same side, you can't just stake out left or right, you both have to run back and forth. Just makes it a little harder.

That's all for now. Sayonara.

Diet update (wow, big news there...).

Day 21 (Sun): 136
Day 22: 136 <-- official 3-week weight
Day 23: 135
Day 24: 135
Day 25: 135
Day 26: 133

Yes, that's another 3 pounds. My official 3-week weight is the same as my 2-week weight, I thought I had plateaued (or is it "plateaud"?) ... um, I thought I had reached a plateau (yeah, there you go!).

2 pounds this morning? I think it is a blip, as I had a handful (ok, maybe 2) of M&M's. But, I'm still only at a single coke -- that was on Saturday (Day 20). I got a massive headache, because I didn't eat enough lunch. I was helping a friend with his Boy Scout Eagle project (ok, a friend's son, but the friend's other son is friends with my son), and lunch was one of those deli sandwich rings -- mainly bread. So, I thought I'd eat just 2 slices and no chips and drink water. MISTAKE! It would have been safer to eat chips or some more sandwich, because then I wouldn't have gotten the headache. Oh well, live and learn.

I went to the store to buy jeans, mine were hanging off me. I got a pair 2 inches smaller than what I was wearing. Not "tight," but almost snug. They should loosen up, then shrink back when they get washed.

Had an interview, I feel a little overqualified. They need someone to work in VB, with an Access database, and work on file import/export stuff to another database (I think an older version of Access). With my RDBMS background, Access seems way too light-weight. If I had to advise them, I'd say to look for a mid-level programmer, not a senior-level (like me) -- maybe 4-6 years of experience, not my 15+ years! This company is owned by General Dynamics, so there might be some lateral movement available later. I'll have to wait and see if they want to offer me enough money.

Another note on the diet front, I've been eating "Uncle Sam" cereal with Splenda (the "yellow stuff"), and it's not so bad. I can add enough to make the cereal almost sweet, without getting a bad aftertaste. However, it's not too good with iced tea, I get a really bad aftertaste, probably because I like so much sugar in my tea.

That's all I can think of now; I think I'll keep the weight updates down to once a week or so -- we'll see.

Hasta manana (or whenever).

Saturday, January 24, 2004

Continuing with the diet. Phase 2 is less restrictive, you are supposed to add in some of what you were not allowed to eat in Phase 1, but not going "whole-hog" to be really bad. I usually am just adding some bread (whole grain -- the Pepperidge Farm 9-Grain is pretty good), or fruit (whole, never juice).

My weight? Pretty stable.

Day 18 (Thu): 137 pounds
Day 19: 135
Day 20: 136

A pound up or down is pretty insignificant. The really bad part is that I have not had a coke in almost 3 weeks. I've lost a grand total of 3 pounds. If I have to eat like a rabbit to stay 3 pounds lighter, I'll just go back to eating bad!

To be honest, I feel like I've lost some weight around the middle, but not a whole pants size. My jeans are looser, but some of my other pants (like Dockers) are not significantly looser.

Yesterday was my last day with the project. They took me out to lunch, and I just didn't go back to work -- with permission of my boss, of course. I had finished everything, and tried to leave notes about what I had been working on, in case someone had to look at it. Two different people had leads that they talked to me about, so we'll see. Still waiting on word from the other resumes I sent, guess I'll have to follow up with them on Monday.

I'm a little bummed with the project ending, but I know that everything happens for a reason, that God is in control of everything, so He must be leading me somewhere. I just wish I'd find it!!

Hasta la vista.

Tuesday, January 20, 2004

Wow, a whole week between posts.

I found out on Friday that my project, that looked like it was going to be extended through the end of this year, is terminated this coming Friday. No funding. All contractors in this department let go. Bummer. Time to job hunt again -- w00t!

Diet update:

Day 10 (Wed): 137 pounds
Day 11: 138
Day 12: 137
Day 13: 137
Day 14: 136
Day 15: 136 <--- official 2-week weight
Day 16: 136
Day 17 (today): 136

Still no sweet drinks (coke's or sweet iced tea). Moved onto "Phase 2," where you are allowed some fruit and whole-grain breads in moderation.

Wow, 3 pounds in 2 weeks, 2 the first week, 1 the second week. To be honest, I had already lost some weight before starting this. I worked at Publix (a grocery store) for 5 months, in the Produce department. You have to lift things that are sometimes a little heavy (50 lbs of potatoes). The part you, as the customer, do not see is that we have to lift everything 4 times.

1: Lift from wherever we keep it (floor, back room, etc.) to a cart
2: Lift what is already on the shelf, to move it somewhere else
3: Lift from the cart to the shelf
4: Lift from where we moved the original product back on top of the new stuff.

This way, the newer stuff is on the bottom, so the old stuff doesn't just sit there and rot. The customers don't seem to appreciate when they pick up something and it is moldy or rotten. blech.

Sayonara!

Tuesday, January 13, 2004

Ok, diet update. My official 1-week weight is 137, or -2 lbs. Big whoop. However, I have noticed that my watch -- one of those with a fixed-length band -- is looser, and keeps spinning so it is under my arm, instead of on top. I guess I lost those 2 pounds on my wrist. My pants are a little looser, but not a lot.

Day 8: 137
Day 9: 137 (no change)

My wife is having a rough day today, she's really getting tired of salad. I'm ok so far, but I can feel my body craving the sweets. I have a bag of M-and-M's in my briefcase that I haven't opened, and I'm trying not to open them. It's hard!

Actually, the hardest thing to give up is sweet drinks. I always had a Coke, Dr. Pepper, or Mr. Pibb (ok, "Pibb Xtra"), or sweet tea -- especially at a barbecue place. They have the best (pronounced "sweetest") sweet tea.

RANT

I actually asked a guy stocking Coke's what the "Xtra" in Pibb Xtra was -- caffeine, sugar, what? He said, "Nothing. I guess marketing." Here, buy new Pibb with xtra marketing!

I'm still playing Threads of Fate (Rue's story). Rod changed weapons (Gold Gale?), I got the Platinum bracer and belt, and whooped him 5 times in a row. I finished the Wylaf (dragon) part, I guess I'm 2/3 done or so. Not exactly sure, since I haven't finished the game before, but the walkthroughs I'm reading (after I finish each section I read the walkthrough -- so I don't get rid of things I need) are about 2/3 down the walkthrough part.

The monster "coin" thing is weird to get used to, and it is hard to not pick up coins, but sometimes you really want to keep one of the monsters but you don't have a way of "skipping" one.

C Ya.

Sunday, January 11, 2004

Oh, forgot to say that I updated my fav GCN (Nintendo GameCube) game from Super Mario Sunshine to SSX Tricky. Sorry, Mario, but SSX Tricky really sucks you in. I've mastered all the characters twice (erased and started over), and even got gold on Pipedream. The first time I played through I couldn't even get close on Pipedream, but after the second time -- using Zoe *pant* *pant* -- it was a breeze, I got gold the first time I tried. I guess you learn how to do tricks quickly, and can judge better how much time you have versus how long the trick will take. I didn't even go into the halfpipe (halfway down the mountain), although I used the larger halfpipe at the end -- the one with all the glass you get to break.

I'm playing through Threads of Fate now. I had bought it a long time ago, I think I saw it on sale or something, but never started it. Through the 2nd dungeon (Corona Forest and Underground Ruins), and have defeated Rod 2-3 times.

Off.
Ok, another few days go by. Here's my weights:

Day 5: ??? (I guess I forgot to weigh myself)
Day 6: 136
Day 7: 136

Tomorrow is the "official" weighing, it will have been a full week of dieting. This South Beach Diet seems more and more like just good advice from your doctor. Stay away from sweets, eat more vegetables, preferrably raw, lots of fiber.

The only weird part is his "hatred" (too strong a word?) of certain vegetables / grains. His big no-nos are white flour (they take all the nutrients out while bleaching, so they have to "enrich" it again), white potatoes (does that mean Yukon Gold are ok?), and carrots and corn (too much "sugar" in them). The corn I understand -- especially baby corn, yum! -- but carrots don't seem that "sweet" when you eat them.

His explanation of the foods to stay away from concern how fast your body absorbs the sugars out of the food. For example, he makes a scale of the different forms of an apple: whole (with skin), skinless, applesauce, then apple juice. Your body absorbs the sugar slower with the skin and everything (ok, not the core, for those literal-minded readers) because it has to deal with the fiber of the skin, but on the other end of the spectrum is the juice, which is absorbed very quickly. It passes from your stomach to your small intesting quickly, and then, WHAM, into your bloodstream. I guess you might as well inject apple juice into your veins!

I haven't really cheated on the diet, but I have stretched things a little. I took raw broccoli for lunch, and put some bleu cheese dressing to dip into; the book suggests low-fat dressings only. Instead of low-fat mayonnaise, I'm just using regular mayonnaise. I like Miracle Whip, which is lower fat, but I think they replace the fat with sugar -- a bigger no-no. However, I haven't had a coke for almost a week. I'm drinking water with all my meals, except 1 or 2 that I had unsweetened tea -- yuck. Not that I don't like tea, but I'd rather have lots of sugar in my tea, like you get at Woody's or Sonny's. No candy. I have some Breath Savers, sugar-free mints, 5 calories each, that I'm allowed in moderation (75 calories total for sugar-free hard candies).

For those that wonder, I don't like sugar substitutes. I've tried all 3 (pink stuff, blue stuff, and the new "yellow stuff"), they all leave a bad aftertaste in my mouth. We made some sugar-free Jello, I have to eat it with my lunch second, so I still have food left to cover up the aftertaste.

I haven't noticed any inches off my middle, but it's hard to tell. I'm getting the middle-age weak stomach muscle bulge, where I can still "suck it in" but if I relax it hangs out some. My jeans seem to hang on me a little, I might have to buy some new jeans first -- no "butt crack" allowed here!!

Ciao.

Thursday, January 08, 2004

Doing some more "optimal weight" surfing, found another calculator that said for a medium frame (unscientific method: can you get your thumb-middle finger around your wrist? don't touch=large, touch=medium, overlap=small) 5'4" person, you should be 135-145 -- I'm right in the middle of that range. For a small frame, 132-138.

Another measure is BMI (Body Mass Indicator). Entered my height and weight, and it gives me 23.9. The "normal" range is 18.5 -- 24.9, so I'm at the high range of that one, but still within "normal."

Anyway, like I said before, I'm looking for fat off my middle, not pounds off my frame.

Bye!
Been a while, got a job -- short-term contract, was supposed to be 1-2 months, has been 3, has been extended to 5, will probably go another several months after that.

Started on the South Beach Diet after the kids went back to school. I've never "dieted" before, but this seems like a good idea. My wife is on it, and I really started to support her. However, I'm eating more vegetables (hey, I LIKE vegetables!), and not drinking any cokes (for those in the north, that's pronounced "pop" or "soda") for a while. A good thing.

Here's a weight update:
Day 1: ?? (Bought a scale on day 1, so didn't weigh myself that morning)
Day 2: 139
Day 3: 138
Day 4: 139

I'm not looking for massive weight loss. I'm 5'4", my optimal weight is between 114 and 145 lbs, so I'm at the high end of "optimal." I'd like to be down 5-10 lbs, but not sure if I'm going to get any lower than that. What I REALLY want to lose is some "belly fat." I don't have much of a beer belly ("coke belly"??), but there is definitely a concentration there.

Oh yea, I forgot to rant. I guess with so little sugar running through my veins, it is hard to get worked up over things.

HOWEVER

What is with these people driving during rush hour? I had a lady in front of me this morning that insisted on putting on makeup, drinking her coffee, and smoking a cigarette. She ALWAYS left about 2 car lengths in front of her -- I guess so she didn't crash into the car in front of her -- so we had quite a few people from the next lane jump in front of her. ARRGGHH!!

Maybe a painball gun ... yeah ... :-)

TTFN!
